Rustlers Stop the Hornets in 3

Huntington Beach, CA  ­‑ Golden West women's volleyball team put an emphatic end to its losing streak with a straight-set victory over visiting Fullerton College in an Orange Empire Conference match.

The Rustlers needed just 70 minutes to post a 25-8, 25-23, 25-11 victory. The victory ended Golden West's.

The Rustlers were paced by sophomore Cassidy Paperny and freshman Jasmine Gonzalez. Paperny had a team-high 19 kills with five digs and five blocks. Gonzalez (Long Beach Millikan High) had 10 kills with a 12 digs. Sophomore Kate Stanjevich had 15 assists, 14 digs and a kill. Sophomore Baileigh Graham had a team-high 16 digs and two assists, freshman Ashleigh Atsaros (Huntington Beach High) added five kills and sophomore Megan Wiggins had a team-high 17 assists and 10 digs.

In the first set, Golden West opened on a 14-1 run and cruised to close out the set.

The Rustlers played point-for-point with Fullerton in the second set. With Fullerton leading 21-20, Golden West went on a three-point run to take a two-point lead. Fullerton rallied to tie the score at 23-23, but the Rustlers scored the final two points to take the set.

Saddleback broke out early in the third set, taking a 4-2 lead. Golden West went on an 8-2 run to take the lead. The Rustlers outscored Fullerton, 11-6, down the stretch to close out the set and the match.

The Rustlers return home at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2 with a conference match against Santiago Canyon.
