Rustlers Lose Tough 4 Set Match

Huntington Beach, CA -­ Golden West women's volleyball team showed a great deal of tenacity Wednesday night, but came up short in a four-game loss to visiting San Diego City in a nonconference match.

The Rustlers won the opening set, but dropped the next three in a 25-21, 21-25, 23-25, 22-25 defeat that took just over two hours.

Golden West (2-4) was led by a trio of freshman: Eden VanWaardenburg (Marina High), who recorded team highs in kills (15) and blocks (5) and added a dig and an assist; Keilani Pearson (Huntington Beach High) who had 11 kills and 13 digs and Erica Cantley (Cypress High), who had 34 assists, 13 digs, five kills and two aces.

Sophomores Ashleigh Atsaros (nine kills, three digs); Jatyauna Newburn (eight kills, four digs and a block); Amanda Sosa (17 digs) and Kayelyn Nunez (13 digs) also paced the Rustlers.

Golden West continues the nonconference portion of it season with road matches at Ventura on Friday and in Santa Barbara. The Rustlers open Orange Empire Conference play at Fullerton on Sept. 15.

Golden West returns home to host Santa Ana at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 20.
