Nunez's 16 Digs Not Enough

Huntington Beach, CA­ - Golden West women's volleyball team got a firsthand look Wednesday at one of the best teams in the state in visiting Irvine Valley College, ranked No. 2 in the state and No. 1 in Southern California.

The Rustlers came into the match unbeaten in Orange Empire Conference play and riding a three-match winning streak. Golden West was more than game, but fell to the Lasers in three sets, 20-25, 19-25, 14-25.

Freshman Keilani Pearson (Huntington Beach High) had eight kills and three digs and sophomore Kayelyn Nunuz had 16 digs to lead the Rustlers (6-7, 3-1). Freshman Erica Cantley (Cypress High) added 15 assists and four digs, sophomore Jatyauna Newburn had four kills, sophomore Amanda Sosa had seven digs and sophomore Ashleigh Atsaros had three kills, two digs and two blocks for Golden West.

Golden West travels to play Riverside College on Friday. The Rustlers return home to host rival Orange Coast College, ranked No. 19 in the state, at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 29.
