Golden West College women's water polo concluded their 2024 season with a tough 11-6 loss to San Diego Miramar College in the SoCal Regional Championships on November 14 at Orange Coast College. Despite a valiant effort, the Rustlers struggled to contain Miramar's offense, ending their season with a 16-11 record.
Golden West opened the scoring early, with Allyssa DeMayo finding the net just over a minute into the game. The Rustlers' defense held strong throughout the first quarter, shutting out Miramar and taking a 1-0 lead into the second period. However, Miramar quickly turned the tide in the second quarter, outscoring Golden West 5-2. Emma Roberson led the charge for Miramar, scoring three of her game-high five goals in the period, while Golden West saw contributions from Hanna Menyhart and Candice DeMayo to keep the game within reach at halftime, 5-3.
In the third quarter, Miramar continued to dominate offensively, with Nalani Galindo scoring twice and Roberson adding another goal to extend their lead. Golden West managed two goals in the period, including one from Makena Gray and another from Angi Franzetti, but Miramar's efficient attack proved too much, pushing the score to 9-5 entering the final quarter.
Golden West showed determination in the fourth quarter, with DeMayo scoring her second goal of the game to cut into the deficit. However, Miramar's Sophie Skedd and Roberson sealed the victory with two late goals, securing the 11-6 win and advancing to the next stage.
DeMayo led Golden West with two goals, while Menyhart, Gray, Franzetti, and Candice DeMayo each added one. Goalkeeper Nathalia Johnston faced a barrage of shots, recording 10 saves to keep the Rustlers competitive.
The loss marks the end of the season for Golden West, highlighted by their resilience and teamwork throughout a challenging schedule. The Rustlers will look to build on this experience as they prepare for next year.
