Kamakawiwo'ole Tosses 4 TDs in First Start, No. 3 Golden West rolls to 56-14 win over East LA
HUNTINGTON BEACH – Making his first start of the season, sophomore quarterback Kauna'oa Kamakawiwo'ole threw four touchdown passes to help lead No. 3 state-ranked Golden West College to a 56-14 rout over visiting East Los Angeles College on Saturday at Rustler Stadium.
The Rustlers completed the first half of the season with a perfect 5-0 record and are 2-0 in the National Central League as they head into a bye week.
Kamakawiwo'ole had a big game, completing 13 of 19 passes for 170 yards. Three of his four TDs came in the second quarter.
Golden West held a 14-6 lead before Kamakawiwo'ole tossed drive-ending touchdowns in the second to Tanner Schmidt (21 yards), Will McKissick (7 yards), Aaron Mitchell (15 yards), and again to Schmidt (24 yards) to open the third quarter.
On his lone pass attempt of the contest, quarterback Noa Banua connected with David Daniels for a long 56-yard touchdown midway through the third as part of a 35-0 scoring run by the Rustlers. East Los Angeles (1-4, 0-2 NCL) finally broke that string with a TD late in the third, but the Rustlers got the points back on the ensuing kickoff thanks to an 88-yard return for a touchdown by Kendric Thomas.
Late in the first quarter, Nainoa Simmons ran in for a one-yard touchdown to get the Rustlers on the board.
The Golden West defense also did its part to limit the Huskies' scoring chances. The Rustlers totaled three interceptions, with two coming from Drew Faulkner and another by Mason Driffill. Driffill returned his INT 61 yards for a touchdown early the second quarter.
Rob Andrus and Zeph Misa both had sacks while Asher Jackson led the defense with 5 total tackles.
The Rustlers return to action on October 9 when they travel to Pasadena City College for a Thursday night National Central League game. Kick off is scheduled for 6 p.m. at PCC's Robinson Stadium.
